The AAII Orange County Chapter presents...

"Portfolio Risk Reduction by the Proper Introduction of Real Estate"

    Discussed by:

    Tim Mulrenan
    President, Terravest Inc.

Investors need to diversify their investments among asset classes in order to manage risks while achieving attractive risk-adjusted returns. The current low interest rate environment has driven bond prices to levels that may not hold in the event the economy recovers and interest rates rise. Furthermore, if inflation returns, the impact upon bonds may be devastating. The low income from bonds, CDs and Treasury bills has penalized savers and starved fixed-income investors who rely on yield for living expenses. Stocks have been volatile since the 2008 collapse, and too much concentration may increase risk in a portfolio beyond that which may be prudent for retired investors. This presentation will discuss the impact of adding real estate to an investment portfolio, analyzing the different ways investors look at real estate compared to stocks or bonds, and review alternative vehicles for adding real estate to a portfolio to manage overall risk.
