The AAII Los Angeles Chapter presents...

Global Trends and Outlook

    Discussed by:

    Frank Barbera
Co-Manager, Sierra Core Retirement Fund; Executive Vice President, Sierra Investment Management

Frank Barbera, a long-time friend of the Los Angeles Chapter of AAII, always has some very insightful comments about the economy and the markets. This presentation will update attendees on current economic trends, both in the U.S. and in Europe. Barbera will address the outlook for capital markets, including equities, bonds, currencies and commodities. He will also discuss what happened in December 2011 to turn around the cascading Southern European Debt Crisis, and to enable equity prices to rise in the early phases of 2012. The outlook for the U.S. dollar will be a central theme.

Currencies: Diversification and Downside Risk

    Discussed by:
    Axel Merk
President and CIO, Merk Investments; Portfolio Manager, Merk Funds

When traditional asset classes, like equities and fixed income, move in tandem, how do you protect against the downside? Where do you find uncorrelated returns, low volatility and profit opportunities regardless of the market direction? What is happening with the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen and gold? How will they impact your portfolio? Axel Merk, “the Authority on Currencies,” will discuss the current macroeconomic forces driving global currencies and how the currency asset class may help diversification.
