The AAII Phoenix Chapter presents...

"Currencies: Diversification and Inflation Hedge"

    Discussed by:

    Kieran Osborn
    Senior Analyst, Merk Investments

When traditional asset classes, like equities and fixed income, move in tandem, how do you protect against the downside? How do you fight the inflation boogeyman? Where do you find uncorrelated returns, low volatility and profit opportunities regardless of the market direction? What is happening with the U.S. dollar, the euro, yen and gold and how do they impact your portfolio? Kieran Osborne, an authority on currencies, will discuss the current macroeconomic forces driving global currencies and how the currency asset class may help provide diversification and inflation hedge.

Due to greater uncertainties, financial planning after retirement becomes more challenging. The focus of this SIG is financial planning, with an emphasis on investing for retirement income. Our group welcomes different viewpoints and participation from both experienced and new investors. December’s topic is “Protecting Yourself from Fraud in Self-Directed IRAs.”

Health Care Reform and Medicare SIG, Saturday, December 8, 2012, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. (after the chapter meeting in October, December, February and April). Contact: Allan Zee, allanzee@argeusgroup.com. Same date and location as chapter meeting. Cost: None.
Last month’s election will have somewhat clarified the future of the Affordable Care Act. At this writing, which is prior to the election, we still don’t know what the outcome will be. New cost estimates show that the real cost will be substantially higher than the $900 million that had been predicted at the time the law was passed. In addition, there are major taxes going into effect on the insurance industry, medical device makers and drug companies beginning in 2013, which will inevitably be passed on to the consumer. Penalties for not purchasing government mandated insurance will begin in 2014. As all this is happening the tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, referred to as the Bush tax cuts, are set to expire. Determine what effect this will have on you. Join us for an informative and spirited discussion.

Options & Analysis SIG, Saturday, December 8, 2012, 1:16 to 3:30 p.m. (after the chapter meeting). Contact: Rick Climie, rclimie@ieee.org. Same date and location as chapter meeting. Cost: None.
All AAII participants are invited to improve their wealth building and management skills through the use of option instruments and analysis tools. You will benefit from a combination of tutorial presentations and active discussions. These range from use of options to generate monthly income to “hedging” for protection of your stocks and portfolios. Participant depth ranges from initial learning to active traders. You are welcome to join our quest to combat the unprecedented market changes and uncertainties. REMEMBER: No one is as concerned about your wealth as you (or your spouse) is. We will work closely with the new Stocks and ETFs SIG. This includes rotating the meeting start time and sharing facilities.

Stocks and ETFs SIG, Saturday, December 8, 2012, 1:16 to 3:30 p.m. (after the chapter meeting). Contact: Beatrice Kenney, beakenney@yahoo.com, 480/406-8942. Same date and location as chapter meeting. Cost: None.
The goal of this SIG is to create smarter, better-informed, successful traders and investors through experiences with high-quality stock trading information. Independent traders and successful investors will present their methods and strategies of trading. Charting tools and tactics will help traders and investors profit from investments and trades. Investor psychology, portfolio strategies and handling potential losses are some of the subjects covered. Opportunities to listen and learn, take an active role in the group or make a presentation are available. We share meeting time and location with the Options & Analysis SIG.
