Investing imposes four questions on every investor. Whether you answer them explicitly—or let chance provide default responses—depends on whether you recognize the questions and, perhaps more importantly, whether you understand what each is asking you to decide: 1. What asset allocation is appropriate for me? 2. How do I achieve diversification, and what does it really mean? 3. Do I want to follow an active or indexed investment strategy? 4. Should I rebalance my portfolio—if so, when and how? We’ll address each of these questions and more. You will leave with a fresh perspective and the ability to make more confident and more informed decisions. Until recently, economic and investment theory assumed that people always behave rationally. Most folks, however, just aren’t wired for making rational investment decisions. They are, unfortunately, most optimistic (wanting to buy) when there is the least opportunity for return and most pessimistic (wanting to sell) when there is the greatest opportunity for return. We’ll also discuss how to succeed amid the emotional realities of investing.
