AAII.com: AAII Stock Screens

by CI Staff

AAII’s Stock Screens area (www.aaii.com/stockscreens) provides you with access to a wide range of stock strategies and investment approaches. Stock screens are updated monthly (in the middle of each month with data from the previous month-end) and cover over 50 stock investment strategies. Each month members can view a list of companies that pass each screen as well as track the performance over the past eight years.

Screen Overview

Choosing “All Screens” at the top of the AAII Stock Screens page provides you with year-to-date and total performance figures (since January of 1998) for each of the screens we track. The screens are categorized by investment goal—value, growth, growth & value and specialty—then listed alphabetically. For each screen, the “Screen Overview” link on the right takes you to an article discussing the screen in detail including background on the investment strategy and descriptions of the criteria included in the screen. These articles can be printed for easy reading. To see a list of the criteria only you can click the “Screening Criteria” link in the right-hand “Screen Links” menu box.

Passing Companies

The “Passing Companies” link (found on the All Screens page) allows you to view a list of the stocks currently meeting all of the screen’s criteria. The lists can be downloaded to Excel. A full screen view is also available. The lists include company name, ticker, exchange, price and select figures important to each individual screening process. To get current price and other key quote data about a company, you can click the ticker symbol.

Screen Performance

AAII offers multiple ways to view a screen’s overall performance. The “Performance Chart” links found on the “All Screens” page next to each screen take you to a graphical representation of that screen’s performance since the beginning of 1998 compared to the S&P 500 index.

A table with annual performance data on all of AAII’s screens, plus each strategy’s average standard deviation, average monthly holdings and turnover can be found by choosing the “Performance” heading at the top of the main AAII Stock Screens page. Screens are broken into categories and then listed alphabetically. You can also download an Excel file listing annual returns for the last eight years as well as month-by-month returns for the past eight years.

Screen Characteristics

The “Screen Characteristics” table (found on the All Screens page) presents a snapshot of the stocks that made up each portfolio at a specific point in time. This table is updated semiannually and provides an indication of the types of stocks that each strategy tends to hold. The file can be downloaded to Excel as well.
