Cake Premium is a new on-line investment service that helps fund investors manage their investment accounts. The service is a personalized mutual fund engine that analyzes the mutual funds you own and suggests similar funds in the same category with better performance, lower risk, and lower fees.

The first step is to enter details about yourself and your investment accounts. Cake Premium requires your current age, expected retirement age and your annual salary. Next, you can connect to your brokerage accounts (the site has over 40 listed). Cake Premium will then analyze your holdings and your retirement goals to provide alternative investments. For example, the site may suggest that you are paying too much in annual expense fees. You will also get an overview of your allocation based on cap size and fund type. A brief analysis of your risk level follows.

Finally, you can select a new allocation strategy and reallocate your funds based on the new data. Cake Premium suggests new funds and new allocation levels for funds you already hold. You must go through your broker to make the actual changes to your account, but Cake Premium lets you see how the changes will impact your overall portfolio. After you have made changes, you can print a sheet detailing all of the portfolio updates.

In addition, you can set personal retirement goals and do a simple “what if” analysis by changing your retirement age, savings percentage, and anticipated retirement and Social Security income. The tool shows you how much money you will have at retirement based on those assumptions. A portfolio performance table tracks your holdings over a five-year period and an allocation tool shows your current allocation among asset types.

System Requirements: Internet connection

Price: Cake Free allows for basic investment tracking; Cake Comparison costs $29.99 per year and is a mutual fund comparison tool; Cake Premium costs $99.99 per year.

Checklist Investor

Checklist Investor is a stock analysis program that allows you to evaluate your investment ideas systematically. The idea for the program was inspired by Benjamin Graham’s “Intelligent Investor” book and philosophy. The program comes with 14 checklists based on other investment gurus in addition to Ben Graham, including Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Martin Zweig and John Templeton. Each checklist includes a list of criteria or questions to ask yourself before you buy or sell a stock.

After logging into the program, you can learn more about each checklist then decide which ones you would like to use. You can choose one or all 14. You can also customize the checklists by adding your own criteria to the list, or you can create your own checklist from scratch.

When entering transactions into the program, you are shown the checklists you chose earlier. A place for comments allows you to note why you are buying or selling. You can revisit these notes in the future to track your trading decisions.

Transactions can be labeled as buy, sell, hold, thinking, short and short cover. A summary page lists all of your transactions entered with transaction prices, quotes and the checklists you used.

This is not a portfolio tracking or management tool; it is intended for use when evaluating stocks for purchase and sale. Checklist Investor helps you create a thought process for each investment and is great for tracking the reasons for purchase or sale. Looking back at holdings to see your own reasoning along the way can be a useful learning tool.

AAII is a nonprofit association dedicated to investment education. Take a peek at all the member benefits AAII has to offer.

I-Metrix Pro is a suite of stock data and analytical tools offered by EDGAR Online. An on-line component provides fundamental data and statistics including summaries of financial statements, ratios, multiples, price data, company news and more. I-Metrix converts company SEC-filed statement data into XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language), which is a data standard used in financial reporting.

The meat of the program comes from its Excel component, which allows you to download a number of company-reported filings such as the 10-Q and 8-K. I-Metrix provides preliminary, final, restated and amended financial statements for over 30,000 global public companies.

An add-in for Excel must first be installed; you will find the file in the Analytics area of I-Metrix Pro. You can then download any of the filings using the add-in within Excel.

For example, a 10-K filing might include various worksheets showing the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement for a stock’s current and previous periods. Right-clicking on any data point brings up the source documents for the data.

You can also read static data filings in PDF, Word and the original formats.

In addition to the Excel files, I-Metrix Pro includes an on-line stock screening tool with a database of over 11,000 stocks and over 7,000 criteria for screening. You can create custom screens or use the program’s predefined screens. You can also create your own custom fields.

Finally, you can create a customized dashboard to display information for companies you have specified. You can also be alerted when companies file certain reports.
