VectorVest RealTime

VectorVest RealTime is a stock analysis and charting system that sorts, screens, ranks and graphs over 8,300 stocks using 41 indicators, 28 of which are updated in real time.

The homepage of the program is fully customizable and uses a “box” format, where information is separated by boxes that can be rearranged. The default homepage has a market-timing gauge that measures market sentiment—from semi and fully bearish (red) to semi and fully bullish (green)—and a table of recent news stories.

VectorVest RealTime uses a tabbed system for quickly and easily moving from the homepage to graphs, portfolios and more.

The Viewers tab allows users to view a list of stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). You can choose to view the list by industry or sector. The table shows price change; buy, sell or hold recommendations; numerous prices; price-earning ratio; earnings per share; and VectorVest’s VST rating (value, timing and safety). You can rank the list by any of the criteria in the table. A unique feature of the RealTime program is the ability to view these statistics as of a past date and time.

The program has impressive graphing capabilities as well. Customization is available for timing, dates, technical indicators, comparisons and more. A number of the indicators are available in real-time.

You can also create multiple transaction portfolios of securities. The program handles buying long, selling short and long, and covering shorts. A unique tool lets you look up intraday prices. Most programs will pull up the closing price on a specific date but with VectorVest RealTime, you can specify the time of purchase as well. This allows for more accurate pricing of stocks that have price fluctuations throughout the day. The portfolio tool also handles interest and dividend payments. For new users, a help section with links to video tutorials is a welcome feature.

QuoteMachine

OnTick’s QuoteMachine software allows you to test stock trading strategies in real time or on an end-of-day basis. The program’s homepage is fully customizable: You can add charts and fundamental data feeds, create portfolios, see numerous top- and bottom-performing NYSE and NASDAQ stocks, and more. Overall, the program offers real-time or end-of-day data on equities, indexes, and bonds as well as end-of-day options data.

The charting feature allows you to pick the chart style and parameters and choose from over 25 indicators and overlays. By right-clicking on the chart, you can add more indicators, save the chart image or export the chart data to a .csv file. Once you have created your chart, you can right-click the indicator lines to set alarms that are sent to you via E-mail and that appear in a display window in the program.

You can also create a trading model by entering basic data into the program’s form. You can choose an indicator and trading conditions and then run the model to view its theoretical performance.

Another unique feature allows you to select a basket of stocks and have QuoteMachine plot the value of that basket as if it were an individual security or index. You can also specify the weights of the stocks in the basket.

Other features include 25 years of historical data, option chains, the ability to link to your broker’s Web site for trading, a portfolio tool that offers current quotes for your stocks, and a continuous display of trades and quotes for a symbol.

QuoteMachine is not as “slick” as other real-time trading tools, but it is simple to use and offers a way to backtest trading strategies.
