Slim case/bag for 15” MacBook Pro and iPad.

Leaving the workforce and going back to school has been quite the transition for me, and one of the biggest adjustments is that I have to start carrying my laptop around again. Therefore, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect laptop bag, and thanks to CI Editor Wayne Thorp, I had the opportunity to try out the booq Viper courier 15. We have reviewed a couple booq products in the Computerized Investing Gadget Corner, including the booq Mamba catch S and the booq Cobra brief L, both written in 2012. The Viper courier is more compact than the Mamba and the Cobra, but it can still fit a MacBook Pro and an iPad perfectly.

The Look

Compared to the Mamba catch S and the Cobra brief L, the Viper courier is very slim and sleek. I was given the gray-colored bag, which works well for men and women. I am all about fashion, so finding a bag that suits most of my outfits was important to me. The Viper’s look has a business casual feel to it, and its sleek design can be paired well with anything from a formal suit to a pair of summer shorts. The case is made of natural fiber and has an added bonus of an organically dyed waterproof exterior. The interior is padded for your 15-inch MacBook Pro and an iPad; the padding definitely makes me confident that my computer will be protected under the worst of unfortunate events.

Design & Construction

Although the Viper courier is compact and slim, it has many pockets and slits that can hold anything from a 15-inch laptop and an iPad to your phone and chargers. I had no problem storing both of my large devices as well as their chargers. My biggest complaint about laptop bags is that if they’re not too bulky, then all of the gadgets I put in the bag make it look bulky and, dare I say, unfashionable. I was happy to see the Viper able to contain its slender image in spite of being filled to the brim with my phone and folders along with my computer and iPad. The MacBook Pro fit snugly, which is exactly how you want it to fit so it doesn’t slide around when walking. My only complaint is that while my wallet fit in the bag, it made the bag look a little bulky when added to everything else in there—but maybe it is because my wallet is way too big.

The Viper courier has an outside pocket that is ideal for your phone or anything you need to reach immediately, such as a bus pass. The back of the bag has a pocket that can fit your iPad or a folder or two. The inside of the laptop pocket also has a zipper pocket that couldn’t fit much more than some papers or perhaps something flexible, such as a pair of gloves. There are little pockets everywhere for pens and other little things, so the Viper courier certainly allows for organization. The bag sports carrying handles as well as a removable shoulder strap (with shoulder pad). I’ve carried the bag using both, and both have been convenient for me. My one issue is that the shoulder strap did make my shoulder sore after a while when carrying both my laptop and iPad; with that said, that’s not really the bag’s fault as much as it is the weight of the devices. The bag itself does not add much weight at all, weighing only 2.3 lbs.

One final feature of the Cobra briefly worth noting is the booq Terralinq service. Each booq bag with Terralinq carries a unique item number on a gunmetal label. After purchasing your booq bag, you can register its Terralinq number so that if you ever lose your bag and it is reported to a lost and found, Terralinq will contact you with the bag's location and the finder's contact information.

This has to be one of my favorite laptop bags. I have yet to find something that is convenient and efficient while still looking as sleek and professional as this one does. At $110, I think this is a good buy for the quality and the size. Many laptop bags run for much more than that and don’t offer as much as the Viper courier.
