Google Docs (soon to become Google Drive) is a free, web-based office suite and data storage service offered by Google. It allows users to create and edit documents online as well as share documents and collaborate with other users in real time. As its popularity has grown, users have been looking for a way to access their Google Docs from their mobile devices. One of the best apps out for iOS devices is GoDocs from Light Room. This app, which costs $4.99, allows you to read, edit and share your Google Docs from your iOS device.
After installing the app on your iOS device, you must log in to your Google account. Once you have done this, all of your Google documents load. From this list, you can sort documents by name, type, date created, etc. Tapping on a document will also give you additional information on it, including description and last edit date. Unlike cloud-storage services such as DropBox, GoDocs allows you to actually interact with your Google Docs in a number of common formats, including documents, spreadsheets, video, audio and PDF. You can open, edit, share, track edits, email documents and more. You can download docs to your iOS device for offline viewing, but the app does not currently support offline editing. You can also upload documents from your iOS device to Google Docs via GoDocs, although currently the app only supports photos and videos.
If you are collaborating with others on a document, GoDocs offers push notifications to alert you when something has changed in a shared document.
A recent upgrade to GoDocs is that it now also supports Google Drive, Google’s cloud-based storage service.
Overall, we found this to be a tremendously useful app. If you are a heavy user of Google Docs, GoDocs for iOS is definitely worth the $4.99 cost.
