I have reviewed a few docking and charging stations over the last several months that support the Apple iPad and iPod (you can find them in the Gadget Corner archives at the Computerized Investing website). However, the i.Sound Power View Pro is unique in that it allows you to dock both an iPhone and an iPad (in either landscape or portrait mode) along with two additional USB-powered devices. The model I reviewed was given to me by the company.
Setup & Use
Setting up the Power View Pro is a snap. After plugging the adapter into the docking base, attaching the adapter to the power brick, and plugging it into an outlet, you are good to go.
The dock has a charging slot for an iPad and another that supports interchangeable dock adapters for a fifth generation iPod nano, third generation iPod touch, iPhone 3G/3GS or iPhone 4. On the back of the base are two USB ports for charging two other units. In order to use the landscape mode stand for an iPad, you would need to plug it into one of the USB ports. In fact, with the Power View Pro you can charge up to three iPads simultaneously (I was able to charge both my iPad and my iPad 2 at the same time), along with an iPod touch.
LED indicators on the right side of the base provide power and charging status for units plugged into the charging docks (but not for units plugged into the USB ports). A pulsing blue indicator light lets you know the unit is charging, while a steady indicator light means the unit is fully charged.
It is perhaps worth pointing out that the Power View Pro is not a speaker system.
Aesthetically speaking, the Power View Pro is a nice-looking piece of gadgetry. It is composed of matte aluminum and high-gloss plastic and matches the look of my Apple products perfectly. The glossy plastic does collect fingerprints rather easily and is susceptible to scratches.
Slightly marring the clean look of the base is the chunky power adapter, which is necessary to provide sufficient power.
The Power View Pro measures 6.0 x 13.0 x 3.0 inches (width x height x depth) and weighs in at just over three pounds. Its dimensions are comparable to those of power mats that are on the market, and it fits easily on a desktop or nightstand.
The ability to charge an iPad and an iPod or iPhone simultaneously without the need for charging cables is a compelling feature of the i.Sound Power View Pro. Throw in the ability to charge two additional USB devices, and this is an attractive option for those looking to charge multiple gadgets at the same time. Its unique features make the $80 price tag justifiable. If you want to save some money, look at a third-party supplier, such as Amazon.com.
