As social media has become more entrenched in our daily lives, more and more investors are turning to it to keep track of their investments. The Stock Tweets app for iOS allows you to monitor mentions of specific ticker symbols on Twitter. Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based messages of up to 140 characters, known as "tweets." You can follow CI Editor Wayne A. Thorp’s Twitter feed at twitter.com/AAII_CI.
Stock Tweets is available for free from Apple’s iTunes. Once you have installed it on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, you will see the “news feed,” or tweets, of your selected tickers and markets, as they are mentioned over the Twittersphere. This news feed is static, however, meaning you have to swipe down on it to load the latest information. We would prefer the news feed to be dynamic and automatically load like some of the other Twitter apps.
Along the bottom of the screen is a crawler with the latest quotes for your selected tickers and a bar with revolving market quotations. Tapping on the crawler opens the Stocks View, where you can edit your preferred tickers so they will appear on the ticker crawler as well as in the news feed. The app tracks stocks, indexes and exchange-traded funds.
As self-proclaimed social media junkies, we think Stock Tweets is an interesting app. In general, we have found that tracking social media coverage of stocks offers some unique insight that you don’t always pick up following traditional financial media outlets. Like message boards of old, what you see needs to be taken with a grain of salt, especially since some tweets are opinions and not hard news. With that said, however, this app may also give you a better idea of what is driving the activity behind a given stock.
