TickInvest is a stock charting and technical analysis software that provides both real-time and end-of-day charts. Twenty-nine built-in indicators are available, as well as drawing tools to help you keep track of support and resistance lines. The program also comes with backtesting and screening capabilities.
To open a chart using TickInvest, select a group and interval at the top-left of the program and enter the symbol of the asset you want charted. Right-clicking on the chart allows you to select the chart type, chart scale, time range, and remove indicators currently being displayed. You may also right-click to save your current charting options so that new charts automatically open in the same format. You can scroll through the time range by holding down your left mouse button and moving the mouse in the direction you want to scroll. To zoom, place your mouse over the chart and use the mouse wheel.
Three types of charts are available—candlestick, open-high-low-close, and line. You are also able to chart either linear or logarithmic charts. The time range provided includes one month through 10 years, or you can view all available data. There are a number of indicators that are built into the program. You are able to draw indicators on each chart by selecting the indicator from the menu at the top of the program.
Although TickInvest is powerful, the learning curve is steep. In order to have the program create an indicator, backtest a strategy, create a drawing, or run a screen, you must write your own script. For example, a script to search for stocks closing between $10 and $100 would be written as follows:
filter = close > 10 and close < 100
The Script Editor contains a list of all the functions, as well as what each function is designed to accomplish. There are various operators, such as “less than” and “greater than,” and you can assign values to variables. “If” and “then” statements are also included.
This learning curve is the main downside to TickInvest. From our experience, this program will take longer than a couple of days to master. The help document is quite expansive, but we would recommend this program for experienced users.
