The most useful feature of YCharts is its ability to chart over 70 different metrics—including revenue growth, market capitalization and dividend yield—for over 5,000 companies. In addition, YCharts allows you to chart total returns, which takes into account a stock’s price appreciation as well as its dividend yield.
To get started, simply enter a ticker symbol in the quote box on the home page. A customizable price chart along with key statistics for the company are provided at the top of the page. If you scroll down, there will be a series of other charts, including total return, income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement charts. The income statement chart presents the trailing-12-month revenues, expenses and net income; the balance sheet chart graphs the total assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity; and the cash flow statement chart depicts the trailing-12-month cash from operations, cash from investing activities, and cash from financing activities.
Select the tabs at the top to bring up more detailed information. For instance, the performance tab shows five-year return performance broken down into total return and price appreciation, both numerically and graphically. Furthermore, one-year total returns are presented for the company you have selected as well as for the S&P 500 and the company’s two largest competitors. The website also shows fundamental performance charts, such as price against earnings, earnings yield against dividend yield, and revenue and earnings growth charts. These charts can provide a sense of whether the company has gotten cheaper or more expensive in relation to earnings over the course of several years. For example, the price against earnings may show the stock’s price has only appreciated 10% over the past three years while its earnings have increased 100%. This alerts you to the possibility that the firm could be at a cheap price point.
On the right-hand side of the main quote tab, you are able to select to graph any of over 70 fundamental data points. However, certain data points are only available to paying “Pro” subscribers.
A historical data tab is also available. The tab not only provides historical price data, but also allows you to choose from 70 other financial rankings. In essence, this tab provides the numerical values of the financial data instead of providing it in tabular format.
The most comprehensive feature offered by YCharts is its charting capabilities. However, the website does also allow users to run simple screens. It also ranks companies according to fundamental criteria within sectors or over its entire universe.
Most of the data contained at the website is provided free of charge. To upgrade to Pro, which unlocks all of the fundamental criteria and provides more detailed financial recommendations, costs $39.95 per month.
