Investing analysis, as most investors know, can consist of both fundamental and technical analysis. Most investors have a good understanding of fundamental analysis and can find websites that help perform this type of analysis, but many are also looking for online resources to help them understand the basics of technical analysis. ClearStation, a website from E*Trade, targets investors who are looking to use more technical analysis in their investment approach. The site is free and provides a wealth of information to help you get started.

The first area most users should visit is the Education section. This area is designed to give users the foundation needed to get the most out of ClearStation. The articles provided start with Trading Basics and go through Reading Graphs, Trending, and Oscillating. Furthermore, an article on using ClearStation is also offered. Each article has numerous sections, and the educational information provided is fairly comprehensive. Once you familiarize yourself with the site, navigating the various areas and interpreting the information should be simple.

Your ClearStation account is headquartered at the Focus section. This area provides an overview of your portfolios and watchlists. There is a list of your portfolios at the top of the page, along with the gains and losses for the day. Technical and fundamental events related to the stocks in your portfolios and watchlists, statistics on these stocks, and highlights from other areas of the site are listed below your portfolios.

ClearStation also offers users access to a large community of investors through the Recommend area. Upon signing up for the site, you will be set up automatically with a Recommend portfolio. Members of ClearStation’s community are able to see your list of stocks and you are able to see other users’ Recommend portfolios. In addition, the site lets users subscribe to certain Recommend portfolios, allowing you to learn from more seasoned investors and opening up a range of new investment possibilities. There is also a Discuss section that functions as a forum.

The final section worth mentioning is Tag & Bag. This area provides lists of stocks that have been sorted according to fundamental, technical and community analysis. The investment ideas are all listed by category (such as “most active”) and trending issues and lists can be sorted by any of the column headers. The Graphs in Bulk feature allows you to quickly sort through the graphs of many stocks to see if any merit further research.

By and large, ClearStation provides a great marriage between technical and fundamental analysis, allowing users to add the technical element to their research. The site offers access to a large community for investors to learn from each other and provides a comprehensive education section to help you get started.
