    AAII.com: New and Improved

As of press time, we are nearing the finish of a year-long AAII Web site re-launch. The new site includes more power, more articles and a better navigation system—all rolled up into one design concept that makes everything easier and more fun to use.

When the new AAII.com is available, you’ll note that we made the site wider, the fonts bigger and the articles easier to read. We’ve also introduced more photos and graphs into our content so that compelling visuals complement the investment text you read on AAII.com.

To simplify navigation, we’ve divided the site into topical areas that mirror the membership benefits and investment education we focus on. The clickable headings run across the upper section of pages in a navy blue bar and include: AAII Journal, Getting Started, Financial Planning, Investing, Model Portfolios, Stock Screens, Discuss, Chapters and Store. Here we highlight our favorite areas and features.

    AAII.com Home Page

The AAII.com home page provides users with a quick overview of content and site features that are handpicked by AAII editors for your benefit. The content changes daily, so visit often.

In addition, the site now includes a sub-navigation bar for each topical area that changes to reflect the links and content available on each page. This serves as an easy way for you to determine which areas of the new site you would like to visit.

    AAII Journal

Online AAII Journal articles are now easier to read, include more art and link directly to other articles in the same issue. This makes for easier navigation and an improved reader experience.

    Asset Allocation

The asset allocation area of AAII.com allows you to quickly see the investment allocation styles and performance histories for three different types of asset allocations: conservative, moderate and aggressive. Further, the area provides articles and graphs that assist you in determining what your allocation targets should be when considering the following asset classes: large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap stocks; international stocks; emerging market stocks; and intermediate- and short-term bonds. The redesign presents all this information on a clear and organized page for your ease of use.

    Stock Screens

The Stock Screens area on AAII.com is dedicated to teaching members about a wide range of stock selection strategies and investment approaches. We’ve enhanced the searching and sorting capabilities of the site so that users can now search through our library of over 50 stock screens by the following criteria: category, year-to-date return, one-year return, five-year return and total return. Plus, you’ll note that we’ve partnered each screening overview article with convenient tabs that let you quickly see the screen’s passing companies, screening criteria, chart and more.

    AAII Model Portfolios

AAII’s model portfolios area offers members-only portfolios covering stocks, mutual funds and exchange-traded funds ETFs. With the redesigned site, we’ve made it even simpler to learn about these popular member benefits by including an easy-to-read getting started resource that is available with each model portfolio we offer.

Redesigned AAII E-Newsletters: Investor Update & Stock Screens Update

The weekly AAII Investor Update and the monthly AAII Stock Screens Update e-newsletters have been completely redesigned. The new formats are easier to read and provide even more useful information.

    AAII Investor Update

The AAII Investor Update now provides weekly market and economic commentary from AAII Journal Editor Charles Rotblut. He discusses current trends from an unbiased viewpoint and points out important data that might be flying below the headlines.

The AAII Investor Update also provides a preview of the coming week’s financial calendar. You will get a list of the potentially market-moving earnings reports; see the release dates for important economic data; read about upcoming Treasury bond auctions; and find out when Federal Reserve officials are scheduled to speak.

By publishing the AAII Investor Update on Thursday (in the past, it was published on Monday), we can also provide the latest results from the AAII Sentiment Survey. Find out if AAII members are more bullish or bearish on the market and get an analysis of the trends that the results suggest.

Of course, the AAII Investor Update continues to highlight important and timely items on AAII.com. You will be notified of the latest content posted to AAII.com and the most popular pages.

    AAII Stock Screens Update

The monthly AAII Stock Screens Update features a screen handpicked by AAII Associate Financial Analyst Cara Scatizzi. Cara explains why it may be a good time to review the chosen strategy.

She also provides a concise overview of the screen’s characteristics, a discussion of the results, and links to see a list of passing companies and more detailed information about the screen.

Two additional e-newsletters are also available. The AAII Journal Update lets you know when a new issue of the magazine has been posted to AAII.com. The CI E-Mail is a special, biweekly newsletter written especially for Computerized Investing subscribers.

It’s easy to sign up for and manage your e-newsletter subscriptions. Just visit www.aaii.com/email and select the newsletters you wish to receive.

New Supplemental Benefit: Introducing the AAII Discover Bank Program

AAII is pleased to announce that we’ve partnered with Discover Bank to give you access to certificates of deposit CDs, IRA CDs, money market accounts and online savings accounts earning preferred members-only rates that are higher than the nationally advertised rates on comparable Discover accounts.

Though you may know them for their credit products, Discover has actually been in the banking business since 1911—and today, they’re emerging as one of the nation’s leading direct banks. As an AAII member saving with Discover, you’ll benefit from:

    • Rates that have consistently exceeded the national average1
    • No minimum opening deposit requirement
    • Easy and convenient online account management

1 Based on top 50 U.S. banks by deposit provided by Informa Research Services, Inc. as of 5/19/2010.

2 FDIC deposit insurance temporarily increased from $100,000 to $250,000 per depositor, per deposit category, through December 31, 2013.

Academic Awards: Fostering Investment Education and Research

Four papers won awards for investment research from AAII in 2009. The awards are presented as part of AAII’s ongoing effort to encourage education and research in the area of investments and are given for papers that provide insight into investing.

The awards are made in conjunction with the meetings of major finance associations around the country. The best academic paper in investments presented at these meetings is selected by a committee of investment research experts.

AAII awards the writers of winning papers $1,000, and papers are selected based on the quality and thoroughness of research and on the contribution to shaping effective investment decisions.

“Research that rigorously tests old investment theories or proposes new approaches to investment decisions based upon analysis of financial data is particularly meaningful for individual investors,” says John Markese, president of AAII.

Since the program began in 1983, over 135 awards have been presented. The award-winning papers and recipients for 2009 include:

“Better Than the Original? The Relative Success of Copycat Funds,” by Yu Wang and Marno Verbeek of Erasmus University, awarded by the Eastern Finance Association.

“Corporate Financing Decisions and Managerial Market Timing,” by Alexander W. Butler and Jess Cornaggia of University of Texas at Dallas, and Gustavo Grullon and James P. Weston of Rice University, awarded by the Financial Management Association.

“Are Stocks Dumped or Neglected by Analysts Inferior Investments to Covered Stocks?” by Hei-Wai Lee, Vivek Sharma and Kelly Nianyun Cai of the University of Michigan–Dearborn, awarded by the Southern Finance Association.

“Portfolio Residual Return Analysis: Detecting Activity and Predicting Performance of Portfolio Managers,” by Anders G. Ekholm of Hanken School of Economics (Finland), awarded by the Southwestern Finance Association.

These papers are technical; however, the AAII Journal does publish the findings of papers that are of particular interest to individual investors. If you would like a copy of a paper, you can contact Alyna Johnson at (800) 428-2244 or ajohnson@aaii.com.

    Supplemental Benefits

AAII offers several supplemental benefits to members. These include discounts on financial publications, such as Barron’s and the Wall Street Journal, and an insured money market deposit program.

We view these programs as supplemental benefits and do not want to lose sight of our main purpose. However, many of these programs are helpful to a significant number of our members; in some cases, they provide AAII with additional income. For example, with the new Discover money market program, AAII receives 0.05% per year on the outstanding deposits. These funds help us to support our investment research grants and to educate individual investors.

Future supplemental benefits will also be offered as opportunities, and not as recommendations. Only you can decide what is best for you.

I am curious about the stock screen "Earnings up 5%." This screen seems to have outperformed the rest of the screens over ten years. How often is the screen run to select stocks?

Charles from IL posted over 4 years ago:

Allen, the screens on AAII.com are updated monthly, around the 15th of each month. -Charles Rotblut
