Do Falling Oil Prices Have Stocks on a Slippery Slope?

For the third straight year, U.S. stocks experienced a New Year’s hangover, with domestic listed stocks losing an average of 9.1% for the month. The large-cap Vanguard 500 index fund (VFINX) lost 5.0% during January. As a market-capitalization-weighted index, it was slightly buoyed by larger stocks. In contrast, the Guggenheim S&P 500 Equal Weight (RSP), which invests in the same stocks as the S&P 500 index but with equal dollar weighting, was down 5.6%. With all the market volatility we are seeing these days, it is easy to forget that the S&P 500 ended January just 8.9% below its all-time high. For long-term investors, market volatility actually offers opportunity.
