Shareholder Activism: Generating Uncorrelated Returns in Your Portfolio

    Discussed by:

    Steven Abernathy
Chairman and CEO, The Abernathy Group

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Finance, stock prices of companies targeted by activist investors earn 10.2% average return during the period surrounding an activist's ownership disclosure, and an additional 11.4% abnormal return during the following 12 months. Shareholder activism has gained popularity, as the nation?s most intelligent investors successfully agitate for change against corporate boards and management teams, thus becoming the catalyst necessary to unlock value and improve the performance of their investments. The green mail days of the 1980s have evolved into strategies of operational turnaround, corporate restructuring, M&A and returning capital to shareholders.
