Biography:

John McDermott, Ph.D., is an associate professor of finance at Fairfield University’s Dolan School of Business and chief investment strategist at Symmetry Partners LLC. He joined both Symmetry and Fairfield University in 2005, after retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard as a commander, after 21 years of active duty service. McDermott earned his B.S. from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, his MBA in finance from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. 

The Financial Management Association International and American Association of Individual Investors honored McDermott with the 2000 Best Completed Dissertation Award for the dissertation that “makes the most significant contribution to the field of investment analysis.” His research has been published in various noted finance journals including the Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Financial Markets, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, and the Journal of Futures Markets.

McDermott and his wife Jean live with their three children in East Lyme, Connecticut.
