Biography:
Philip Moeller is the principal author of the “Get What’s Yours” series of consumer guides published by Simon & Schuster: “Get What’s Yours for Medicare: Maximizing Your Coverage, Minimize Your Costs” (2016; revised 2024); “Get What’s Yours for Health Care: How to Get the Best Care at the Right Price” (2021); and The New York Times bestseller “Get What’s Yours: The Secrets to Maxing Out Your Social Security” (2015; revised 2016), cowritten by Larry Kotlikoff and Paul Solman.
Since 2018, Moeller has provided stories and videos about Medicare, health care and retirement to UnitedHealthcare Inc. From 2014 to 2019, he wrote about Social Security, Medicare and other retirement issues for PBS NewsHour in his “Ask Phil” column. He is a past research fellow for the Center on Aging & Work at Boston College. From 2014 to 2016, he was a contributing writer for Money. From 2008 to 2013, he was a contributing editor for U.S. News & World Report, where he wrote about aging, health and retirement. Moeller is co-author of the e-book “How to Live to 100” (U.S. News & World Report, 2012).
From 2005 to 2007, Moeller was an executive in charge of corporate communications at Genworth Financial Inc. (GNW), a General Electric Co. (GE) insurance and financial services spin-off that went public in 2004. He managed global public and media relations for the company and oversaw its annual report. From 1994 to 2002, Moeller founded and helped build Insure.com into a leading site for insurance information.
Earlier, Moeller was a business writer, columnist and editor for several newspapers, including The Charlotte Observer, Chicago Sun-Times, Baltimore Sun, Louisville Courier Journal and Hartford Business Journal. He and his staffs won major business journalism awards. He was an active leader in business journalism for more than a decade, serving as a governor and president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, now called the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.
Moeller graduated from Princeton University, earned a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and studied economics at Columbia University as a Walter Bagehot Fellow. He also taught business journalism at Northwestern University. He currently lives in central Virginia.
