Pharmaceutical Stocks Recent News
Global medicine use is expanding steadily, with China leading the way and mature markets leveling off. A report by the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science details that total usage is expected to approach four trillion defined daily doses by 2030. Global spending on medicines is projected to exceed $2.6 trillion by 2030, rising between 5% and 8% annually. China has been the fastest-growing market since 2020 and is forecast to nearly double its usage by 2030 relative to 2020 levels, while North America, Western Europe and Japan are expected to grow more slowly. Once population is factored in, global medicine use is projected to grow just 1.9% annually over the next five years, versus 2.7% growth unadjusted for population. North American per capita medicine use is projected to grow only 0.9% per year through 2030.
As the report points out, the spending story is concentrated in a handful of wealthy countries and a few therapy areas. The U.S. and 14 other high-income countries account for 76% of global spending growth through 2030, while emerging pharmaceutical markets are expected to add about $121 billion over the same period. Oncology, immunology, diabetes and obesity drugs are the biggest contributors to that growth, driven by a steady flow of innovative products, mainly lipid regulators. Given these global trends, should you invest in Amphastar Pharmaceuticals, Indivior Pharmaceuticals and Pacira BioSciences?
