Tributes
“Jim was soft-spoken and always ended his sentences with a wry smile. His demeanor belied a sharp intellect and way of thinking that was outside the box, qualities that led to much of the success of AAII. Yet he was never without Edie, and was always talking about family. He touched so many lives, including my own for the 20+ years I worked with him. AAII was a wonderful place to work and I am so lucky to have been part of it.”
—Maria Crawford Scott, former editor, AAII Journal
“I remember interviewing Jim on Channel 26 ‘The Stock Market Observer’ TV show in Chicago when he founded AAII. It was a noteworthy effort at the time—educating the individual investor to make intelligent investment decisions. At that time, individual investors were derisively called ‘odd lotters’—fodder for professional traders. They paid the highest commission rates, received stock and market news last in the chain—as inequality in information was exceeded only by inequality in investment education in those days. Jim was ahead of the curve, with Edie by his side, in seeing and creating the opportunity for individuals to learn, to interact and to demand recognition and respect. He leaves behind a wonderful legacy.”
