Announcing the 2019 Cloonan Award Honoree: James O’Shaughnessy
During AAII’s 2019 Investor Conference, James O’Shaughnessy, chairman and co-chief investment officer of O’Shaughnessy Asset Management, will be presented with the Cloonan Award for Excellence in Investment Education. O’Shaughnessy has been a pioneer in quantitative equity analysis and is considered one of America’s leading financial experts.
Author of four books on investing, O’Shaughnessy has been awarded several U.S. patents for his investment strategies and is considered among a class of “Legendary Investors” alongside Benjamin Graham, Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch, according to Forbes. His best-selling book “What Works on Wall Street” is in its fourth edition and is considered one of the most influential works on investing. O’Shaughnessy’s research has shown that buying groups of stocks with low price ratios, high shareholder yields and strong price momentum will outperform any other market strategy.
AAII’s board of directors established the Cloonan Award for Excellence in Investment Education in 2013. Past honorees have included: AAII’s founder James Cloonan; John Bogle, founder of The Vanguard Group; Mark Hulbert, founder of the Hulbert Financial Digest; and Bruce Johnstone, senior marketing investment strategist at Fidelity Investments.
The 2019 award will be given to O’Shaughnessy at the AAII Investor Conference. Beyond receiving the award, O’Shaughnessy will be at the conference presenting a lively keynote discussion.
If you are interested in attending the Cloonan Award Ceremony or O’Shaughnessy’s presentation, simply visit www.aaii.com/conference for more details.
AAII Financial Summary
Annually, AAII publishes its year-end balance sheet for members and life members interested in the finances of the association. Prior years’ balance sheets can be found online in the Member News sections of past AAII Journals.
Join the Discussion With Special Interest Groups at Your Local Chapter
AAII’s local chapters offer individual investors the opportunity to get together and learn financial strategies and skills, but did you know many local chapters also have special interest groups that meet to discuss investing topics more in depth and even invite speakers? These smaller gatherings feature more specialized investing topics and service regions where enthusiastic investors share their knowledge.
The Central Florida chapter’s Beginning Investors group meets once a month to discuss investing topics geared to those just getting started, including how to find a broker, where to buy CDs, how exchange-traded funds (ETFs) pay dividends, how to get grandchildren interested in investing, what records to keep and changes in the income tax system.
“We usually have a chosen topic that we start with for maybe 15 to 20 minutes, presented by one of the regulars at the meetings,” said Michele Burier, who organizes the group. “Everyone is interested in learning and hearing from each other. I try to stress that there are no bad questions and that everyone is there to learn.”
Other special interest groups feature discussions not normally brought up at local chapter meetings, including everything from options and value investing to computerized investing and much, much more. One benefit to these groups is a relaxed and informal setting to meet new investors in.
“Some months we get new faces and some months we don’t,” said Burier. “Whatever our agenda is, it then leads us into discussions about other financial topics.”
If you haven’t yet, please look for an AAII local chapter meeting near you. A topic (or two!) may pique your interest at an upcoming chapter or special interest group meeting. And if you’re interested, consider taking the next step and volunteer at a local chapter to help those in your local community become better investors.
Visit www.aaii.com/chapters for more information and sign up to receive local chapter announcements for your area at www.aaii.com/chapteremail, a free service for members.
Academic Awards: Fostering Investment Education and Research
Four papers won awards for investment research from AAII in 2018. The awards are presented as part of AAII’s ongoing effort to encourage education and research in the area of investments and are given for papers that provide insight into investing.
The awards are made in conjunction with the meetings of major finance associations around the country. The best academic paper presented at these meetings is selected by a committee of investment research experts.
AAII awards the writers of winning papers. Papers are selected based on the quality and thoroughness of research and on the contribution to shaping effective investment decisions.
Since the program began in 1983, more than 150 awards have been presented. Recent award-winning papers and recipients include:
“Is Gender in the Eye of the Beholder? Identifying Cultural Attitudes With Art Auction Prices,” by Renée Adams of Oxford University, Roman Kräussl of Luxembourg School of Finance and Stanford University, Marco Navone of University of Technology Sydney and Patrick Verwijmeren of Erasmus University Rotterdam and University of Melbourne, awarded by the Financial Management Association.
“Can Reinvestment Risk Explain the Dividend and Bond Term Structures?,” by Andrei Gonçalves of University of North Carolina, awarded by the Midwest Finance Association.
“Institutional Trading Around M&A Announcements,” by Viktoriya Lantushenko of Saint Joseph’s University, Eliezer Fich of Drexel University and Clemens Sialm of University of Texas at Austin and NBER, awarded by the Southern Finance Association.
“Futures Risk Premia in the Era of Shale Oil,” by Fabrizio Ferriani, Filippo Natoli and Giovanni Veronese of the Bank of Italy and Federica Zeni of Imperial College London, awarded by the Southwestern Finance Association.
These papers are technical; however, the AAII Journal does publish the findings of papers that are of particular interest to individual investors.
Supplemental Benefits
AAII offers several supplemental benefits to members. These include discounts on financial publications and an insured money market deposit program from Discover Bank.
We view these programs as supplemental benefits and do not want to lose sight of our main purpose. However, many of these programs are helpful to a significant number of our members; in some cases, they provide AAII with additional income. For example, with the Discover money market program, AAII receives 0.05% per year on the outstanding deposits. These funds help us to support our investment research grants and to educate individual investors.
Future supplemental benefits will also be offered as opportunities, and not as recommendations. Only you can decide what is best for you.
Supplemental Benefit: The AAII Discover Bank Program
AAII is partnered with Discover Bank to give you access to certificates of deposit CDs, IRA CDs, money market accounts and online savings accounts earning preferred members-only rates that are higher than the nationally advertised rates on comparable Discover accounts.
Though you may know the company for its credit products, Discover has actually been in the banking business since 1911—and today, it’s emerging as one of the nation’s leading direct banks.
Visit www.aaii.com/discover or call Discover at (800) 347-7513 to learn more about these products and the preferred members-only rates you’ll earn.
