The global supply chain problems have hit us. The cost of the paper used to print copies of this month’s AAII Journal was 46% higher than it was for the November AAII Journal.
Same type of paper. Same number of pages. A 46% increase in price.
We asked our representative at the printer—one of the largest in the country—for an explanation. He wrote back: “The mills are simply not making or delivering paper (with little to zero notice after accepting orders). Many mills are converting to corrugated and not making coated paper. [The largest paper mill] is not taking any orders in January. The only way that I can frame this is that it’s crisis mode. We’re doing everything possible to get paper to keep presses running.”
We are having ongoing conversations with the printer about our options. It is possible you may notice a different type of paper used in upcoming issues. I cannot rule out the possibility of costs rising further and/or delays in printing the paper version of the AAII Journal occurring.
A large number of AAII members already access the AAII Journal in digital-only formats. Those of you who currently have print editions of the AAII Journal mailed to you may want to consider switching to digital given the supply chain issues.
There are several advantages to switching to digital delivery. They include:
- Get the Journal earlier: New issues are published to AAII.com on the first day of each calendar month.
- Save articles for future reading: See an article you want to reference in the future, such as our new 2021 tax guide? You can click on the save button located on the left side of the online article. This adds it your library, which is accessible from the AAII.com home page when logged in.
- Choose to read the AAII Journal online or download a PDF of the entire issue (or any individual article) to read offline.
- A comprehensive archive of past issues at your fingertips: Approximately 35 years of AAII Journals can be accessed with a click of a button.
- Help the environment: By opting for digital delivery, you’ll save a tree and reduce the carbon footprint of printing and mailing a physical magazine.
Switching to digital delivery is easy. You can contact Member Services at members@aaii.com or call 312-676-4307. You can also update your preferences on AAII.com. In the upper right-hand corner of any page on AAII.com when logged in, click on the drop-down menu that says Welcome and your name. Then click on My Account. Below your contact information on the My Account page will be a section labeled My Subscriptions. Click on Opt Out next to the AAII Journal to switch you to digital delivery (Figure 1).
If you would like to be notified when the latest issue of the AAII Journal has been posted to AAII.com, click on My AAII Emails on the left side of the My Account page. (You can also access your email preferences by clicking on the Welcome drop-down menu located at the top of most pages and selecting Email Preferences.) Then, under Newsletters & Updates, put a checkmark by the AAII Journal Update to receive the monthly email, which goes out as soon as the new issue is live.
Still Time to Make Charitable Deductions
To end on a happier note, I want to remind those who take the standard deduction that you can deduct cash donations made to qualified charitable organizations in 2021 up to a total of $600 if married filing jointly or $300 if single or married filing separately. For those who itemize, the 60% of charitable donations cap is again suspended for the 2021 tax year.
Wishing you a happy and healthy holiday season,
