A New Home for Options Strategists

If options investing is your cup of tea, check out the discussion threads in our brand-new Options Investing Strategies Community.

Although options and futures or other derivatives aren’t commonly used by the average investor, they may be an effective investment strategy for those who can handle the risks.

If options investing is your cup of tea, right now we have an open discussion thread in our brand-new Options Investing Strategies Community discussing the key relationship between volatility and options. It began by asking investors, “When was the last time you invested in options and how has your portfolio been impacted by an options investment strategy?”

We are also compiling materials for investors who are interested in learning more about options as well as other derivatives. The Community Library serves as an expansive archive that will house educational resources.

Within the AAII Communities, you can learn about many different investing strategies and gain new perspectives on techniques that have helped others invest with confidence. These communities provide AAII members from across the country with similar investing interests ways to interact and share ideas.

“I’ve joined several AAII Communities over the last few months and I’ve learned a lot about various investment strategies I may not have ever pursued or investigated ... like income investing and options trading,” said one AAII Community member.

Field Notes From the Chapters

With many chapters on hiatus during the summer, we’re busy trialing new services. The new Options Investing Strategies Community has strong support from chapters with options-related SIGs.

We’re also working on a Leadership Academy for chapter leaders to offer new levels of skill and prestige for those who already serve our members with enthusiasm and elan. The goal is to always have a cadre of capable volunteers ready to sustain the chapters.

I live in Sebastian and get invites from a chapter in Melbourne, however, it is a little too far to travel, especially at night. I am a lifetime member for many years. I have also traded options (very successfully) for many years. I was a member of two Investment clubs (Common Cents Investment Club in WI and Sky High Investment Club in TX - received the National Association of Investment Clubs recognition for 15 years of Sky High existence) and held all the required offices as well as teaching the fundamentals of investing in equities. While in Sebastian since (2018), I saw a note in a local news outlet inquiring about an interest in options trading -- I used the Sebastian Library one day a week to share options knowledge and interest starting with 7 attendees and it dwindled down to one, with the remainder of the class dropping because of being too difficult to understand, no stock market experience, not enough money to get started, etc. Would be interested in helping start a chapter in Sebastian if there is any interest. Gary, I was a member of the Miami-Dade chapter which dissolved due to poor participation and minimum stock experience. I traveled to the Broward chapter and noticed the same characteristics. I now live in Palm Beach county and have the same experiences as in Miami-Dade and Broward. I suspect that many potential and newer members feel that attendance at one event translates into becoming an expert investor vs. many years of investing and learning. I attended several seminars on options offered by the industry(eg. FINRA and others) and am proficient at investing in them.
