Discussing Ways to Diversify Across Different Equity Cap Ranges

Find out what other members are saying about their current portfolio allocations; plus, find volunteering opportunities at local chapter communities.

At AAII, we emphasize the importance of having a clearly defined plan when it comes to your asset allocation. In the Mutual Funds & ETFs Community, over 20 comments were posted to a thread asking, “How is your current portfolio allocated across different equity cap ranges?” There were a variety of perspectives on the subject, including:

  • “I tilted toward quality and value to anticipate predicted market trends. I am keeping at least 50% in cash to limit any downside ‘landslide.’”
  • “I am influenced by Vanguard’s recommendation to hold equities in proportion to their representation in the U.S. market.”
  • “I have had a flexible annuity from USAA for going on 10 years and recently purchased two annuities from Navy Mutual Aid.”
  • “I hold mostly U.S. large caps with no international but 50% in multinational U.S. stocks.”

Members went back and forth about how to adjust their allocation after retirement, whether to include annuities in their portfolio, how investors should be rebalancing due to inflation and different ways to spread investments over equity classes to achieve the best diversification. I personally learned a lot from these AAII members, some of whom have been investing for over 30 years.

Field Notes From the Chapters

Think and grow rich. Volunteer and grow richer!

People edging into retirement sometimes find the expanse of unstructured days more confounding than liberating. Many find the answer in service. Over five years as AAII New York City Chapter program chair and now as AAII chapter liaison, my service has conferred some unexpected blessings: I make new friends, I listen better, I stay sharper and I cherish knowing that people still depend on me.

But I am heartbroken to see some formerly robust chapters shutting down not for lack of members, but for lack of volunteers. To help rectify this, AAII has launched a Volunteer Community to match up needy chapters with needful people. Go to https://community.aaii.com, log in with your AAII account and select Volunteer from the Participate drop-down menu to see if there’s a spot you can fill. The chapter you save may be your own. And the person who benefits most may be you.
