An app that reports on the trading activity of the wealthiest investors for others to use as investment ideas.

IBillionaire is an app that offers investment ideas by reporting on and analyzing the investment activity of the wealthiest investors such as Warren Buffett, Carl Icahn and Bill Ackman. Users of the app can review the holdings of select billionaire investors through charts and tables and track their investments through saved portfolios and alerts. The app is free and is available for both Android and iOS devices, but it was downloaded to an Android tablet for this article. The app is easy to read and use. Its information about investor transactions is sourced from required SEC filings.

After you download and launch the app, you are brought to the home page. The home page contains a three-month line chart of a security recently held by one of the highlighted billionaires (only a ‘select’ group of wealthy investors is included). Below the chart is a streamer under Recent Transactions, which shows each transaction on a separate card. Each card contains a picture of the investor in question as well as the amount of the investment and the purchase price. You can slide to the left to see older transactions. Clicking a card pulls up a chart of the company, news about the company and information about the billionaire’s stake in the company. The information includes the percentage of his or her portfolio that the security represents, the percentage of outstanding shares in the company that the investor holds, the average cost of the shares and the total gain. The app features a different “billionaire stock” every day.

Below Recent Transactions, there is a search box where you can find a stock by ticker symbol. Once you enter a ticker, the app shows a line chart of the stock spanning up to three years and reports which wealthy investors own the stock, how much they own and the average cost of their shares. Additionally, if investors have been increasing or decreasing their stake, it will be highlighted here. This area is similar to the layout of Recent Transactions on the home page. News relating to the stock in question is also displayed below the investor details. Basic fundamentals such as current price-earnings ratio (P/E), yield, etc., is shown at the bottom.

At the bottom of the home page, a section called “Billionaire News” highlights news about the companies that investors who are tracked here hold in their portfolios.

A button at the top of the home page allows you to create an account, which then enables you to save watchlists and portfolios and to receive alerts about transactions made by your favorite big-time investor.

IBillionaire is among a crop of financial technology apps (aka “fintech”) that have launched in recent years, but this app fills a rather unique space that is currently unoccupied in the marketplace. While the app name may leave something to be desired and, yes, sounds gimmicky, collecting data on the actions of the biggest investors should be of popular interest.

In fact, iBillionaire launched an index—the iBillionaire index (IBLN)—that tracks the U.S. stocks held by a select group of wealthy investors. IBillionaire has partnered with Direxion to introduce an exchange-traded fund that tracks the IBLN index.

Overall, this app offers a unique take on the investing app and, given its price (free), it is definitely worth a look. Investing like billionaires is an enticing sell, though you should remember to do your own due diligence. While you may not become a billionaire, it doesn’t hurt to know what successful investors are buying as a starting point.
