Thomson Reuters Marketboard App

For the August CI E-Newsletter we highlighted Bloomberg’s iPad app for accessing financial news, quotes, and charts. This month, we look at an offering from another financial media powerhouse—Thomson Reuters.

The free Thomson Reuters Marketboard app offers global market data, Reuters News and Wall Street Events.

Dashboard

When you open Marketboard, the app’s “dashboard” displays the latest day’s performance for a number of global equity indexes as well as top gainers and losers on those exchanges. From the dashboard you can also access the latest company and market news, corporate events and earnings calls.

Company News & Data

If you are looking for company-specific data and news, you can use the app’s search function to search by either ticker symbol or company name. The amount of information available is a bit disappointing—current quote, basic line chart for up to the last five years, related news items, and corporate event information. If you want to add a company to a watchlist, you can add it to your “briefcase.”

Briefcase

The app’s briefcase is where you can bookmark companies in a watchlist along with news articles, corporate event transcripts and analyst briefs. Unfortunately, the most promising content available from the Marketboard app is fee-based—conference call transcripts and analyst briefs are available for purchase at $50 apiece.

Overall

Compared to the Bloomberg iPad, Thomson Reuters’ Marketboard has a long way to go. Hopefully, they will be able to capitalize on the wealth of data and information that is available from the Reuters website and make this a truly worthwhile app. In the meantime, I would look elsewhere for a financial app for the iPad.
