bond duration

A measure of the sensitivity of a bond’s price to interest rate movements. Duration is a formula developed by Frederick Macaulay that calculates the weighted average amount of time it takes to receive the present value of all the cash flows from a bond. Generally speaking, bond duration is less than the term to maturity. There is usually an inverse relationship between duration and coupon rate and between duration and yield to maturity.
