bid-ask spread

The difference between the market price you can sell a security at (bid) and the market price you can buy the same security at (ask) for any given point during the trading day. When a security is trading with a large spread, it may help to enter a limit order in between the bid and ask prices. This helps limit your transaction cost, and your order has a better chance of getting filled.
