cyclical stock

Stocks whose performance is very sensitive to turns in the economy, where underlying demand is tied to consumers. Cyclical stocks can be further categorized depending upon when in the economic upturn they tend to perform well. Before an increase in the economy, stocks in some sectors tend to take off; the consumer housing market is an example of such a segment. Stocks of capital goods producers tend to perform strongly late in the economic cycle.
