Dictionary

cryptocurrency

A digital asset that is constructed as a medium of exchange. Cryptocurrencies enable payments to be sent between users without passing through a central authority (like a bank). They are created and held electronically. Cryptocurrencies create value either through commercialization of products or services or through subsidized revenue generation. Since they are not regulated by any central monetary authority like the Federal Reserve Bank, they suffer from major price instability. Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency.
