earnings

A company’s net income less preferred dividends. Earnings are reported on the income statement as earnings per share, calculated by dividing earnings for the period by the average number of shares outstanding. If a company has convertible bonds or shares, stock options and warrants, diluted earnings per share must also be calculated. Diluted earnings per share represents the earnings available per common share, assuming all convertibles, warrants and options are exercised.
