earnings surprise
Happens when a company's reported quarterly or annual earnings per share differ from analysts' consensus estimate. A positive surprise is reported earnings that are higher than expected. A negative surprise is reported earnings that are lower than expected. Stocks of companies that report earnings significantly exceeding analyst expectations (positive earnings surprise) tend to outperform the market, while those with negative surprises tend to underperform.
