fixed income

An investment vehicle that provides a return in the form of fixed periodic payments and return of principal. Examples of fixed-income are bonds and certificates of deposit. The three main types of bonds are corporate, municipal and U.S. Treasury. Certificates of deposit are issued by banks and are savings accounts that hold a fixed amount of money for a fixed period of time and pay a fixed rate of interest when redeemed.
