initial public offering (IPO)

The process of bringing private companies to the public market for the first time. An initial public offering (IPO) is the first sale of stock to the public by the company or existing shareholders. IPOs provide financing for a company to expand. The process is called as “going public,” and underwriting is typically handled by an investment bank.
