load fund

A mutual fund that charges a sales fee or commission. Front-end loads are charges levied when you purchase fund shares. Back-end loads are levied when you sell your fund shares and are also called redemption fees. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) rules cap mutual fund sales loads at 8.5% of the purchase or sale; the cap is lower when other fees and charges are levied.
