Dictionary
market index
An indicator that tracks the performance of a segment of exchange-listed stocks. Because stocks trade on open exchanges and prices are public, the major indexes are maintained by publishing companies like Dow Jones or the stock exchanges. Major market indexes include the S&P 500 index, the Nasdaq composite, the Russell 1000 index and the Dow Jones industrial average. Numerous other equity indexes have been designed to track the performance of various market sectors and segments.
