Corporate profits earned to date minus any dividends or other distributions paid to investors. The consolidated statement of retained earnings is listed at the bottom of the company’s income statement and details the amount of net earnings available to common shareholders that is paid out as dividends, and the amount that is retained at the firm for future expenditures and expansion. A large retained earnings balance can be a signal of financial health for a company.
