real estate investment trust (REIT)
An investment trust that owns or finances income-producing real estate. REITs make it easy for individual investors to invest in real estate without having to buy and manage private property themselves. Investors purchase shares much like they do with stocks. Most REITs trade on major stock exchanges and are tax-advantaged companies (trusts) that are generally exempt from corporate income tax.
