return on assets (ROA)

A profitability measure calculated as net income divided by total assets. Return on assets is a measure of how efficiently a firm utilizes its assets. A high ratio means that the company is able to efficiently generate earnings using its assets. As a variation, some analysts like to calculate return on assets from pretax and pre-interest earnings using EBIT divided by total assets.
