Dictionary
short-term debt
A firm's financial obligations that are expected to be paid off within one calendar year. A company's short-term debt is listed on its balance sheet as total current liabilities. Firms must have sufficient liquidity to cover current liabilities coming due, or else they may have to incur more debt to cover the upcoming costs. Total current liabilities are used in many liquidity ratios along with total current assets.
