volatility

Short-term fluctuation in the price of a security, commodity or index. The Chicago Board Options Exchange’s Volatility index (VIX) measures the expected volatility of U.S. stocks by gauging investors’ expectations of major market moves. Investors can minimize the effects of volatility on their portfolio by setting an appropriate asset allocation and diversifying among specific types of assets.
