Biography:

As chief research strategist for Russell Investments’ Americas Institutional business, Bob Collie is responsible for the strategic advice delivered to the various parts of Russell Investments’ institutional client base, working with the manager research team, product groups and other research efforts across the firm. Collie joined the company in 1994 as a consultant in the U.K., and has worked for Russell Investments in the U.S. since 2002. He previously worked for William M. Mercer’s actuarial and investment practices.

Collie co-authored, with former colleagues Don Ezra and Matt X. Smith, “The Retirement Plan Solution: The Reinvention of Defined Contribution,” published by Wiley Finance in 2009. This book sets out a vision for the improvement of the defined contribution system, addressing inefficiencies and opportunities that exist both before and after retirement.

Collie is also the author of a long list of wide-ranging research papers on topics large and small. These include Russell Investments’ Corporate Pension Finance Handbook, Don’t Marry a Model, the $20 Billion Club (which follows the progress of the largest corporate pension plans in America), Liability-Responsive Asset Allocation, Dimensions of Difference in Non-Profit Investing, the T standard (a standardized method for the calculation of portfolio performance during a transition), and Responsible Investment: Five Tests of an SRI/ESG Policy. He has also written on subjects as diverse as risk management, global equity indices, the use of options, foreign exchange trading, fund governance, hedge funds, behavioral finance, liability-based benchmarks for fixed income mandates, volatility-responsive asset allocation, defensive equity, mark-to-market pension cost accounting and many more.

Collie has a M.A. in mathematics (first class) from the University of Oxford and is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries.
