Passing the Financial Torch: Start the Generational Dialogue

For National Financial Capability Month this April, AAII is all about bringing different generations together, from baby boomers to Generation Z.

Have you ever received a piece of financial advice from someone older that opened your eyes to new possibilities? Think back to how that advice brought clarity and foresight, changing the way you approached investments or financial decisions. Now, picture yourself sharing your unique insights to guide someone else, offering them a fresh perspective on a strategy or investment.

For National Financial Capability Month this April, AAII is all about bringing different generations together, from baby boomers to Generation Z. We have members who are just starting out with their first 401(k), buying their first home, planning for retirement or figuring out how to cover long-term health care costs.

We understand everyone’s financial journey is different. That’s why we have groups like Small-Cap Investing and Women Investors to help members learn from each other. These groups are great for giving and getting advice, making complex financial information easier to understand for everyone.

Baby boomers and younger generations might think they have little in common. Yet, when they start sharing their financial journeys—successes, challenges and concerns—a bridge forms. This dialogue connects them, proving that we all share similar aspirations and hurdles, no matter the age gap.

As we celebrate Financial Capability Month, AAII invites those of you with financial know-how to help others in our community. Let’s work together to help all investors feel more confident and independent when it comes to their finances. Visit https://community.aaii.com to start participating in discussions.

Field Notes From the Chapters

The average age of AAII members is 72 and 77% of us are already retired. Prime fodder for outlets such as the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA), right? But when the TIAA wanted to reach younger investors, women and minorities, it commissioned a tune from 20-year-old hip-hop rap star Flau’jae to spread the word about financial literacy, economic freedom and building generational wealth. A snippet from the song “Paper Right”:

And my business in order, money stackin’ taller
And lil’ ol’ me just found a seat with all of the greats
I’m investin’ in myself, so it ain’t hard to relate
Inspired the ones that’s younger, was tired of bein’ under
Drinks on me, got my paper right, got my paper right

AAII is employing a bunch of strategies to expand its demographic reach, with chapters on the front lines. We’ve launched Technical Analysis, Options Investing Strategies and Women Investors special interest groups (SIGs) to add sizzle to our topical steaks. Chapters have been surfing some powerful trend waves like cryptocurrency (St. Louis, Phoenix, New York City, San Diego), emerging markets (Los Angeles, Orange County, Cleveland, Sacramento) and artificial intelligence (Houston, Research Triangle).

You can “catch a wave” by tracking our Events calendar for topics that entice. And please invite someone younger! (My mom bit me with the AAII bug circa 1978, and I never left.) That’s a rap you’ll want to take … straight to the bank.
