Growth and Digital Assets Stood Tall in First-Quarter 2024

The tables here show the top 25 and bottom 25 mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for the first quarter of 2024. Digital asset ETFs skyrocketed on the heels of the launch of 11 spot bitcoin ETFs in January. Large-cap growth mutual funds marched higher as the S&P 500 index hit new highs. Meanwhile, commodity focused ETFs fell out of favor and environmental ETFs continued their downslide. Bottom-performing mutual funds reflected challenges in many segments of the real estate market.

Eye candy. Empty calories. There are about 8,000 Mutual Funds and 9,000 ETFs. So, what did we learn from this word article we can use to make future decisions? Digital assets and Large-cap growth mutual funds and Commodities, ESG, and Real Estate ETFs had a good quarter. So what? If I wanted to channel the ghost of Paul Revere, I would see "One if by land" not "Two if by sea" and I would prepare to defend my turf against this invasion, but all five categories are one-off faux "trends." As a more learned person observed, "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon the stage And then is heard no more. It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury Signifying nothing." (Macbeth Act 5 Scene 5.) This soliloquy by Macbeth sets the scene for the final event of the play -- Macduff kills Macbeth and saves Scotland, the “olde sod.” Is this article an ominous omen of our future fates conjured up by a witches' brew? I think not. What say you?

My comment is: what boots it? Two models - if investments are in a tax deferred account, do you really want to switch investment strategies on a quarterly basis? If investments are in a taxable account, do you want to switch investment strategies or funds or ETFs and pay tax on possibly substantial capital gains?
