The investing world is as diverse as the strategies that power its wheels, and the O’Shaughnessy Tiny Titans screen has recently stirred up interesting debates among AAII members online. The discussion shed some light on various aspects of long-term investing, inflation and risk management.

Many of the commenters wrote about their experience with O’Shaughnessy’s Reasonable Runaways strategy, which was formerly called Cornerstone Growth and is followed by AAII under the name O’Shaughnessy Growth II. One member explained that Reasonable Runaways is very similar to the Tiny Titans approach but uses a different market-capitalization range.

There were also several complimentary comments about James O’Shaughnessy’s writings, along with suggestions about modifying screens.

“One thing you might consider borrowing from [O’Shaughnessy’s book] ‘What Works on Wall Street’ is that as a factor, six-month price appreciation seems to perform better than 12-month price appreciation,” one member said in response to another’s post.

Another member, who used to invest in the Tiny Titans strategy many years ago said they have “resumed investing in [it] recently through a combination of AAII’s stock screen and Fidelity’s basket trading feature.”

These discussions underline the dynamic nature of stock screening strategies and the need for investors to adjust and adapt based on their risk tolerance, performance goals and market realities. Field Notes From the Chapters

Cataract surgery. Prone on a gurney, I wait prayerfully. The medical team buzzes around chorefully. The doctor scrubs up and poises scalpelfully. I’m shot sky-high with sedatives. And then they decide to double down on informed consent.

“Which eye are we operating on today?”

“The one without eye makeup,” I croak helpfully.

“Good to go!” they chortle. The operation was a big success.

People have standards that defy all impediments and challenges. Having standards for myself, I can readily sniff them out in other contexts. Like AAII chapter meetings.

For more than 40 years, I’ve observed that our chapters have incredibly high standards. Select speakers, compelling topics, snappy sequencing. And nothing—not even a pandemic, a market recession, a bout of inflation—can knock them off course. Never a dud. Always a winner.
