This First Cut seeks to identify the S&P 500 index stocks that have had the highest price change compared to their peers over the last 52 weeks. The S&P 500 is a market-capitalization-weighted index of 500 leading publicly traded companies in the U.S. The S&P 500 is regarded as one of the best gauges of the performance of prominent U.S. equities and, by extension, that of the overall market.

While 52 weeks is a short period relative to the investment time horizon of the individual investor, it can be helpful to analyze trends or industry leaders that are succeeding over the short term to identify potential investment opportunities.

For example, 16 of the top 30 S&P 500 stocks with the highest 52-week price change fall in the oil production, refining, manufacturing or marketing industries, with four additional companies in the electric generation or equipment industry.

Below are the top 30 S&P 500 stocks as measured by price change over the past 52 weeks, ranked by the magnitude of the price gain—largest to smallest. The S&P 500 fell by 6.3% over the same period analyzed (8/1/2021 to 8/1/2022).

19/30 in Energy. No news there. These numbers are very impressive. Anyone heard of mean reversion? We need is the slope of their average growth curve to see how far away from the mean they are.

Toby, be careful. What goes up, comes down. That's mean reversion. Besides that, the BIGGER RISKS in energy stocks in Fall/Winter 2022 are all the ongoing government policy diddling. It looks like they're doing the Hokey Pokey. All these unpredictable policy changes, predictions of energy supply shortages, and announced price ceiling on home energy prices in UK an EU (and maybe here?) investing in energy could be a game of Musical Chairs, where the last "greater fool" can't find a seat when the music stops. Pay careful attention to who the band leader is. I’ve heard this song before.
