Staying the course, especially during periods of volatility, leads to more favorable outcomes.
Vanguard explored four fundamental principles for successful investing that emphasize goal setting, keeping a balanced mix, cost management and long-term discipline to enhance investment outcomes.
Researchers analyzed the impact of these principles on investment outcomes, examining historical performance data of various portfolios with different asset allocations and levels of diversification. Vanguard also studied investor behavior during volatile market conditions to understand the importance of discipline and a long-term perspective.

The results reveal that disciplined investors who adhere to tailored strategies, maintain a long-term perspective and focus on goal setting and cost management tend to achieve more favorable outcomes. Factors such as regular contributions, staying invested during market volatility and portfolio rebalancing were key to long-term financial success. Investors should also try to minimize taxes and investment costs, both of which cut into returns. Also, the mix of assets in an investor’s portfolio was found to define the range of returns they could expect.
The chart illustrates the potential impact of reactive decisions, with a 21% return for investors who kept a 60% stock/40% bond allocation compared to –2% for investors who fled to cash for the period from March 18, 2020, through July 28, 2020.
The researchers conclude that adherence to their four core principles significantly enhances investors’ chances of success. They emphasize the importance of setting clear goals, maintaining a diversified portfolio, minimizing costs and upholding discipline in the face of market fluctuations.
