As 2023 draws to a close, we reflect on a year of investor resilience and adaptability. Our Special Interest Groups (SIGs) in the online AAII Community have been a hive of activity, with members sharing invaluable insights amid inflationary pressures, pandemic aftereffects and global uncertainties.

Each discussion is a thread in the rich tapestry of shared knowledge within the SIG Communities. We encourage all AAII members to find a SIG that resonates with your investment style, preferences and needs. Your community awaits at the other end of your AAII login—go to https://community.aaii.com to start contributing today.
Field Notes From the Chapters
Being married to a man who speaks English as a second language comes with some unexpected humor and bathos. “Honey,” I asked, “do you know the difference between a playmate and a plaything?” He pondered, like Rodin’s Thinker. “Ah! ... The playmate is still alive!”
Do you speak finance as a second language? Learning about investments from print or online sources can help you be a more effective manager of your assets. And while you can now learn French (or Mandarin!) from an app, there are nuances and street idioms (or their counterparts in finance) that you pick up from interacting with others. The human component enhances and even shapes human learning.
If you were tuned into AAII chapters, you could connect with Fidelity’s Bruce Johnstone on global geopolitical trends (Research Triangle, New England), Mark Skousen on stock and fund selection (Orange County), Ed Barsano on artificial intelligence (AI) and investing (Eastern Michigan), Christine Benz on retirement spending (Houston), Jeffrey Hirsch on market history (Silicon Valley) and Paul Merriman on small-cap value (multiple chapters). And many others!
Whether clinking glasses in person or swapping notes over Zoom, the chapters connection can help you speak finance like a native. Check out a chapter meeting, online or in person. They are live, lively and … alive!
