Halftime Hustle: Tuning Your Portfolio for the Second Half of the Year

Share your six-month allocation check stories. What changes are you making to ensure you stay on track to achieve your goals?

Remember back in January when you were writing down your goals, planning your year and readjusting your portfolio? Well, flash forward to June: Now that half a year has flown by, a midyear check-in is due. This involves sitting down and evaluating your allocation to see if it still meets your investing preferences and needs. It’s crucial to ask yourself some important questions: Are there any gaps in my diversification? Could I add other assets to build a stronger portfolio? Should I be investing more in my Roth IRA? Do I need to set aside more cash to meet my short-term goals such as emergencies or vacations?

Other questions to consider might include:

  • Are you transitioning into a new life phase, such as moving from work to retirement?
  • Is one partner now staying home with the kids?
  • Has a family member inherited wealth from a relative?

These are all scenarios where a six-month allocation check can help you stay on track to achieve your goals.

At AAII, we advocate for a tailored wealth-building plan. Our Allocation Strategies Community is bustling with discussions on everything from the basics of index funds to intricate rebalancing strategies and sector forecasts for 2024.

One question we are asking members is:

Whether you’re contemplating a shift in your investing approach or just want to see how others are responding, your participation is valuable. Log in today and gear up for the second half of the year.

Field Notes From the Chapters

What do you get from shifting tectonic plates, raging volcanoes and outbursts of red-hot magma? Sometimes you get Hawaii. Sometimes you get Pompeii.

Recent years have certainly provided the political, economic and social equivalent of volcanic activity. Outside forces have shape-shifted our chapter communities, too, in ways both creative and destructive.

The destructive force of the pandemic pushed forth the creative potential of livestreaming. Members once bound to a single local chapter can now enjoy online programs offered by several of our chapters nationwide. On the flip side, the march of time has deprived us of some veteran leaders who have moved away or moved on, “burying” the chapters they once enlivened.

We are now focused on rebuilding and strengthening the local chapter communities. The missing ingredient? Leadership talent at the helm. We need some fearless “first responders” to step up and take an active role.

Just as there is breathtaking beauty in both Pompeii and Hawaii, there is extraordinary potential in the growth and transformation of our chapters. The missing volcanic ingredient? New volunteers like you.

JOHN L from NJ posted over 2 years ago:

Instead of frequently checking and re-tuning a portfolio; a better approach would be to stick to a consistent strategy for the long term (20 - 30 years). Paraphrasing Warren Buffet - The stock market moves money from the impatient to the patient investor.

John L is right (again). Buy good stuff, hold onto it, and stay the course. It works!
